Last year Amandla Vinjwa was the winner of our Ispa Super Teacher of the Year award. It was the first time that he entered, which is good motivation for all the newbie teachers out there who are too scared to take the leap and register!!
He told us that the competition was not quite a walk in the park and that it took a bit of perseverance. The great news is that he got a lot of support and feedback from the ISPA Super Teacher Team, which made it possible for him to keep going through all the stages of the competition.
For the ISPA 2017 competition, Amandla and his learners selected a very topical project to do, namely a Technology Collaboration in Water Awareness Campaign. They interrogated and explored ICT tools that could work well to get this important message across. Their campaign was managed using freely available and accessible ICT tools. They used Google Groups, Google Blogs, Google forms, Google cloud as well as Facebook Groups to collaborate and share resources around water use awareness.
So now it is your turn to think about a topical idea for your project. Don't be scared to enter. You will learn a lot along the way and if you get stuck, there will be support to get you through the stages.
For some inspiration, hear what Amandla has to say about his experiences in participating in the #ispasuperteachers competition:
In the run-up to the close of registration for our #ispasuperteachers competition, we will be featuring quite a few of our winners as well as finalists and their experiences of being part of this competition. It is therefore only apt to start with Mokhudu Machaba who not only has won this competition 3 times, but who has also gone on to win quite a few other accolades and competitions featuring ICT in Education!
She has been participating in this competition since 2009 and always made sure that she goes from strength to strength, never giving up, learning along the way. Every year we get a plethora of registrations from Limpopo and we suspect that it can be contributed in part to Mokhudu's caring and mentorship of her colleagues. She has used what she has learned, not just to engage her learners, but also to teach and support other teachers in getting familiar with the use of ICT in the classroom.
To illustrate her commitment to supporting her colleagues, she has trained more than 600 of her peers across the country at various conferences. She has presented workshops and done presentations at the SchoolNet, E-schools Network, Microsoft, South African Basic Education and EdTech conferences. She has trained principals at Bojanala district in the North West in 2015 and at the SAPA Conference in 2016. She was also chosen to represent us in 2015 at the E2 global conference, in Redmond, USA.
Her journey with technology has included working towards her Microsoft Certification and she has been a Microsoft Master Trainer since 2015. She has also extended her love for technology to her community where she has helped youth and women to become computer literate.
After entering and winning the #Ispasuperteachers competition, there was no stopping her and she has conquered quite a few competitions since. She was a finalist of the EDUWEEK 2016 Awards, the GESS 2017 awards, and this year she was a Winner of the 18th Annual teaching awards for Excellence in primary school teaching. She was also chosen as one of 50 most influencuel tech woman in South Africa last year.
The IPSAsuperteachers competition has, in a way been the original catalyst for Makhudu and she in turn has been mentored and supported to enter by previous ISPASuperteacher winners, Phuti Ragophala, Mabore Lekalakala as well as the first #ispasuperteacher winner Mmipe Mokgehle better known as Uncle George. We are therefore looking forward to getting many more teachers to follow in her footsteps!!!
The Internet Service Providers' Association of South Africa (ISPA) and the Digital Education Institute (DEI) have issued a joint call for the country's teachers to enter the 2018 ISPA SuperTeacher of the Year Competition.
Registration opens on 01 March 2018 and will close on 30 April 2018. Amongst other requirements, competition entrants must submit a completed ICT in Education project that outlines the successful implementation of ICT skills and technologies within the schooling environment. All pertinent details are available on www.ispasuperteachers.co.za.
One of the country’s premier ICT in education accolades, the ISPA SuperTeacher of the Year Awards are a much-anticipated fixture of the annual, long-running iWeek Internet industry conference and exhibition and have been held every year since 2001. The iWeek event takes place in September each year and this year’s conference and exhibition will be hosted in Cape Town.
Last year’s ISPA SuperTeacher of the Year Awards Gala Dinner saw the crowning of Amandla Vinjwa as ISPA SuperTeacher of the Year, Marina Myburgh as ISPA TechTeacher of the Year and Mokhudu Machaba as ISPA MobileTech Teacher of the Year for 2017.
According to project manager Milford Malunga at DEI, “The ISPA SuperTeacher of the Year Awards are well respected in education circles, both for their longevity and for the huge role the Awards have played in terms of encouraging teachers to pioneer ICT in their classrooms.”
The teacher project has equipped over 5 000 teachers with ICT skills thanks to continued support from ISPA’s members who pledged their further support at iWeek in 2017.
In previous years, only educators who had participated in ISPA's 'Train the Teacher' ICT skills programme were eligible to submit projects for adjudication by the ISPA SuperTeacher judging panel. Opening the competition up to all educators currently teaching at schools throughout South Africa recognised that tremendous strides have been made in equipping local teachers with the kind of ICT skills that they may want to showcase, even though they may not have received these skills through ISPA and the DEI’s ICT in education interventions.
The three ISPA SuperTeacher award-winners each receive a trophy as well as various sponsored prizes.
See the www.ispasuperteachers.co.za page to register for the competition, for more information on the three award categories and detailed competition entrance requirements.
